I recently made these for my cousin's baby shower. It was my first time working with fondant, and it was not near as difficult as I set myself up for. I know, I know, it's not like I covered a 3 tier cake with it, but I really knew very little about the stuff before attempting this. So here's my beginners intro. to fondant:You can buy Wilton's ready to use rolled fondant at a craft store or Wal-Mart. I got mine from Joanne's with a 40% off coupon.
You can buy it pre-tinted or tint it yourself with gel coloring. I tinted it myself, and it is fairly easy.
It's very similar to working with sugar cookies, just roll it out smooth and cut out your shapes. You can use cut-outs, or try free-handing it.
It was lots of fun, and you can do so many cute things with fondant, so don't let the fancy word make you think it's only for professionals! You can get the directions on making these baby steps here on Wilton's site. Just get creative if you're missing a couple of the tools listed. I didn't have all the tips, so I found other items that worked.
And, of course, I used the beautiful cupcake stand, compliments of Wilton, to complete my work of art!
